Fiona Joyce – Oil Painter

An Oil Painter of over 30 years of experience, Irish born Fiona Joyce used to spend her summers on the west coast in Co. Mayo, and was greatly influenced by the spectacular landscape dotted with isolated white cottages and deserted villages, vast empty beaches, lakes, mountains, wild flowers, fjords and a limitless sky of changing colours.

Although nature with its untamed beauty has been the greatest guiding force and influences much of her work, her subjects are not confined to nature.  She has developed a passion for Politics and “The Bankers are Coming” marks the inclusion of abstraction to her art.   The conical shapes, phallic spire and chimney in the background symbolize the mechanical power of the ruling class and hint at Masonic symbols. As they slowly move forward the background begins to fracture which is exemplified by the splattering of the space behind. The flowers are gentle and natural but they are threatened by this juggernaut approaching them, the closer it gets the sooner the flowers disintegrate and die.

There is a collection of ‘window’ studies which mainly represent glimpses of the world from rooms in different cities but each one deals with its own set of ideas, attributes and emotions. Introspection is central to this collection.

Fiona looks to create a mysterious and slightly askew environment in her work. Objects are misshapen, colours are not entirely representational of reality and the landscape appears somewhat awry. It is like Earth but she imagines it as a parallel other world with distortion and bold colouring at its centre.

She has had a number of successful exhibitions in the UK, Ireland and France. Major influences have been; Kenneth Webb, Mark Chagall, Nicholas Hely Hutchinson, Jack Yeats, Matisse and Edward Seago to name a few.
